MRA DESIGN PROJECT #10-003

Costa Constructions Display Home – Birtinya Island Queensland

The Brief for this project from the builder was to essentially break with the traditions of the standard project home style display home and provide the builder with a showcase of their abilities to construct a minimal one-off design. The design also had to demonstrate effective and innovative use of the narrow 12m wide site, provide a high level of sustainability and present a restrained palette of materials while avoiding superfluous detailing.

The use of “raw” materials such a polish concrete floors and walls provide high thermal mass to aid in combating thermal change. Full height stacking doors to the main northern deck blur the divide between inside and out and also provide substantial cross ventilation by directing cooling summer breezes through the house minimising the need for mechanical cooling. It is hoped that by being able to view building materials, finishes and spacial arrangements that would not normally be used in a display home environment, potential clients will have an opportunity to be enlightened to the benefits of individual, site specific, sustainable design rather than the “drag and drop” approach of many project builders.
